How to avoid fuel surcharge on your credit and debit cards

Cashless fuel purchases attract fuel surcharge per transaction when done through debit or credit cards. Cash purchases don’t attract any extra charge, but cash transactions are usually cumbersome and are better avoided. In fact, as most of us lean towards cashless transactions and digital payment methods, it is best to try and avoid extra charges on our most frequently done transactions, thus saving us a lot of money annually!

Usually a quite few debit and credit cards provide a feature call “Fuel Surcharge Waiver”. What this implies is, if a fuel purchase is made using any of these cards, the bank issuing the card waives of the extra charge on fuel purchases.

Some cards waive off surcharge for one specific fuel retailer like Hindustan Petroleum or Indian Oil or Bharat Petroleum and in addition provide extra rewards points or cash back for those types of fuel outlets.

For example, SBI BPCL credit card waives off fuel surcharge and provides extra rewards points for fuel purchases at BPCL petrol pumps.

While other cards waive off surcharge for any fuel retailer across India. For example, HDFC Regalia Credit credit card waives off 1% fuel surcharge at all fuel outlets across India.

And there are other cards that not only waive off fuel surcharge but reward you with extra points or additional cash back on fuel purchases.
